The University of Connecticut is not good at football.
The #17 Cincinnati Bearcats (8-1, 5,0) tore up the UConn Huskies this past Saturday to the tune of 48-3 and honestly it could have been way worse but Luke Fickell has mercy on those not as fortunate.
My favorite play of the game was the one handed interception that Darrick Forrest Jr. had in the first half. Of course, I couldn’t find a highlight of it.
Let’s not spend our time discussing a massacre though.
First lets focus on Bowl Projections
AutoZone Liberty Bowl
Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium, Memphis, Tennessee
Dec. 31, 3:45 p.m., ESPN
Bonagura: SMU vs. Kansas State
Schlabach: Iowa State vs. Cincinnati
Goodyear Cotton Bowl Classic
AT&T Stadium, Dallas
Dec. 28., noon, ESPN
Bonagura: Cincinnati vs. Oregon
Schlabach: Baylor vs. Memphis
Military Bowl – (ACC vs. American)
McMurphy: Louisville vs. Cincinnati
Dec. 23, ESPN at 2:30 p.m. ET
Tie-In: American vs. Conference USA
Projection: Cincinnati vs. FAU
Four different sources will still give you four different projections. If the Bearcats win out it’s the Cotton Bowl, a loss somewhere could land them in a wide variety of places.
Next let’s talk about the elephant in the room.
Florida State, Arkansas, and USC all need new coaches not to mention Michigan State is 3-3.
Like Coach Fickell said, if there isn’t interest in our coaching staff from other programs then that means the Bearcats aren’t doing that well. Bearcats fans have heard this song and dance before though and so far Fickell has said all the right things.
With that being said I don’t see Fickell going to any of the four teams mentioned above. It’s hard to tell what will take place until the end of the season but I do think UC holds the advantage over the teams that need a coach so far.
Michigan State is the most likely candidate to take Fickell. It’s a blue chip Big 10 team and Fickell plays the kind of football they’re used to. He could still recruit Ohio and possibly play for national championships. I’m not sure Michigan State fires Mark Dantonio just yet. He’s put in a lot of good years for the Spartans.
USC is the next most likely contender. Former UC athletic director Mike Bohn just took over there and would obvisously use his relationship with Fickell to bring him to the west coast. That’s an awfully long haul for a family the size of the Fickells. Unless the pull up in a Brinks truck I don’t see this happening.
Florida State and Arkansas are in the bottom tier with FSU slightly ahead of Arkansas.
I think Fickell stays one more year before someone takes him away in a money truck. When that happens I hope the next AD, whoever they are, looks down the sideline to Marcus Freeman.
The Bearcats travel to Tampa to take on the USF Bulls. If you’re looking for a place to watch the game come out to March First Brewing in Blue Ash for the official GoBeercats watch party, the second of the season. Check out the Facebook event page here. Full preview dropping tomorrow.
