Earlier in the week I ran a poll on Twitter. I couldn’t decide on what brewery to visit next so I let the twitterverse do it for me. The competition was still and I was down to visit any of the four places I listed. After two days of voting 13 Below won out.
13 Below gets its name for being located 13 nautical miles below downtown Cincinnati. I’m not sure how that’s measured so I’m taking their word on that. Either way it was pretty easy to find sitting almost right on the Ohio River and just off of Route 50.
13 Below is located at 7391 Forbes Rd, Cincinnati, OH 45233. When I arrived they were in the middle of an adult Easter egg hunt (Sunday was Easter) They hid 100 eggs around the taproom, each one contained a number and that number corresponded to a prize. I found my egg by the water cooler. I won the koozie pictured above, I was stoked.
Beyond the Easter egg hunt the taproom was very chill. It features a fireplace, plenty of seating, and a patio. TVs are all around and the brewhouse is just behind the bar. The staff was very friendly and more than willing to talk beer.
That Saturday they had 13 beers on tap. I’m not sure if that’s just coincidence or a thing they did on purpose. It’s kind of cool either way.
3. West Coast IPA – in a world where hazy New England IPAs seem to be running rampid it’s nice to find that west coast flavor (cue the Dr. Dre beat) This one was true to style, piney, a little resigny, and smooth. At a cool 7.3% ABV it’ll have you cruising by the palm trees. 3.75/5.
2. Wedding Day – a Belgian Tripel, another true to style beer with a hint of spice at the end. It’s 9.7% ABV will keep you warm. 4/5
1.Fluss Bock – a bock beer and one you might have had at Bockfest this year. Unfortunately when I was down there I didn’t get this one. Luckily for me they had it in the taproom. It’s malty, roasty, and to my surprise just a little smoky. I don’t seek out smoked beers but I’ll try them just like another beer but I’m usually not a big fan. This one was definitely an exception. 4/5.
13 Below has an awesome, unique location coupled with a wide range of delicious beers. I’m excited to check out this place again on a nicer day. They’re releasing a double IPA for the first time soon, a perfect excuse to visit again.
Before you go check them out online.
