This place isn’t just a brewery, it’s a campus, bigger than some colleges and it’s about to get bigger. It’s fantastic.
With all of the buzz that 50 West has caused in recent weeks it was time to go check out the brewery for real. Last summer was my first experience at 50 West in their annual Punch Out, maybe the greatest beer event in the country. It was hard to see everything that they had to offer with so much going on then. This visit I took my time.
50 West is located at 7668 Wooster Pike, Cincinnati, OH 45227. What’s unique is they have a spot on each side of the road with two very different vibes. On one side you’ll find the brewpub, an eloquently decorated, kind of dimly lit restaurant. Upon walking in you’ll find a host in the middle the swag shop on the left and the bar, tables, and patio on the right. This is the more formal side of 50 West, yet still casual. On this side of the street you’ll find a plethora of taps, 24 total if my UC math is right. They have a full food menu on this side too. You’ll also find plenty of parking.
Almost directly across the street you will find the Production Works, landmarked by the huge grain solo out front. This is the active outdoor adventuring side of 50 West.
This place has everything. It features volleyball courts, a bike shop, canoeing and kayaking, training groups, and a running club. Parking is a little tighter on this side but on a busy and beautiful Saturday afternoon spots were open. At the center of this side is the taproom and the brewhouse. There’s a walkup bar full of beer options for you to choose from. Right outside is a large patio and second floor patio overlooking the volleyball courts. From the upper patio you can see the entire campus. It’s quite impressive.
50 West has a lot of beer to choose from. While I was at the brewpub I had a flight, 6 for $12. After I ventured over to the production works I had two other beers and yes they’re served in plastic cups and for good reason. You can’t walk around a brewery’s campus that features everything that 50 West features with a pint glass. The plastic cup plays into their ability to promote an active lifestyle. Broken glasses and volleyball sand do not mix.
Out of the beers I had during this visit to 50 West here are the three that stood out for one reason or another.
3. Drive in Cinema, Pilsner – I need this one in cans. I love the name because my wife and I still go on cinematic adventures to drive ins. The beer though is a smooth 4.5% ABV and perfect for a sunny day while you sit out on the patio watching people play volleyball. 4/5
2. Shaggin’ Wagon, DIPA, – A DIPA brewed with oats and wheat, then dry hopped. It’s a juicy IPA if I’ve ever had one. Pink starbursts juicy with a soft mouthfeel finish. At 8.3% ABV it’ll get the job done. 4.25/5
1.Spare Parts, Stout – This is a chocolate, maple, toasted almond beer. It’s delicious and surprisingly not overly sweet. You don’t have to worry about the maple not coming through, you’ll pick it up right away. 4.5/5
50 West isn’t finished yet. They recently announced that they will expand outside of Cincinnati and into Chillicothe, OH right along Route 50. Something I wrote about right after the news hit. You can read that here.
The staff I encountered was extremely friendly and very helpful with all the questions I had about their beer and brewery. 50 West is a one of a kind brewery not only in Cincinnati but the entire midwest and because of that it’s a must visit.
You can find many of their beers in cans already and specialty releases from time to time.
