Bearcats v Hoakies, lets go!
On Monday December 31st at noon the Cincinnati football Bearcats (10-2)square off against the Virginia Tech Hoakies (6-6) in the Military Bowl in Annapolis, MD. According to one Vegas site the Bearcats are 5 1/2 point favorites. Don’t let their record fool you though. VT is a quality opponent from a P5 conference that is always tough to beat in the post season.
Virginia Tech plays in the ACC, not a strong football conference but one that is led by Clemson, so I feel they get more credit than they deserve. Nevertheless, VT had a weird, unconventional schedule this year. They started off beating a depleted Florida State Team, dominated Wm and Mary, had a game cancelled against ECU thanks to a hurricane, they LOST to Old Dominion, then beat the pants off of Duke. The same Duke that dominated Temple a couple of days ago. (We lost to Temple) From there VT lost to Notre Dame, Georgia Tech, Boston College, Pitt, and Miami (FL). VT finished strong beating UNC, Virginia, and Marshall.
Bearcats fans should be more than familiar with this Hoakies team. The two teams have placed more than usual lately and they’re coached by Justin Fuente formerly with the Memphis Tigers. The Hoakies reached as high as 13 in the rankings this season before nose diving and barely making it bowl eligible for a 26th straight time.
The Bearcats exceeded all expectations this season going from 4-8 a year ago to 10-2 this season. One of those losses, the one to Temple, was questionable. The UCF game just wasn’t our night. The Bearcats beat UCLA, blanked the midshipmen and neutered the UConn Huskies. My favorite moment of the season was probably James Wiggins with the pick 6 in OT at SMU. That was a big time play by the Freak.
The American Athletic Conference
As you can see from the tweet above the American has had a rough go of things this bowl season. So far Tulane is the only American team to win a bowl game. UCF and the Bearcats have to win to save face for the conference. UCF (12-0) goes up against LSU (9-3) on New Years Day at 1pm. As for the 2018 Military Bowl it will mark the 12th all time meeting against the Bearcats and the Hoakies. VT won the last meeting in 2014 in the Military bowl. The Last UC win was at under Coach Butch Jones in 2012.
Since the Bearcats returned to the post season this year in Maryland, we’re going to switch up the way we do the #BeeroftheGame.
The Bearcats defense will have to score a touchdown in this one to secure a win. If the Bearcats D can do that we’ll be celebrating NYE like it’s 1999.
