I’ve survived almost two full weeks of “sheltering at home” and hopefully you and yours are doing well too. Sports are gone from our lives, yesterday I tried to film squirrels racing in my backyard but they’re quick little guys. I couldn’t get the phone out fast enough to capture it. It was fun while it lasted and at least we were lucky enough to see a couple days of sunshine. Hopefully, you brought the grill out like I did.
To help you stay sane below are seven beers I drank this week from around Cincinnati, Ohio, and the world. Here in Ohio our Govenor Mike Dewine has a press conference every day at 2pm with updates on this pandemic in Ohio so naturally people turned that into #WinewithDewine. It’s a good time to crack open one of these beers below.
Let me know what you’re drinking on any of the social media linked above, I’m always looking to try a new beer!
Pilsner from West Side Brewing, Cincinnati, OH

We start off again on the lighter side things this time with a pilsner from West Side Brewing. It’s clean, crisp, light, and checks in at 5.3% ABV and 34 IBUs. Usually this time of year has me looking forward to a new and promising baseball season so I’m digging the baseball laces around the can. This beer is simple and true to style and is easily one of my favorite Pilsners in the city. If your in or around Cincy checkout their website, they’re offering home delivery during all of this craziness, it’s a godsend.
Owler from Urban Artifact, Cincinnati, OH

If you know Urban Artifact you know they’re not typical. They have their own spin for any beer style and the Brown ale is no exception. This beer has all the qualities of a typical brown ale but with a tart twist. Owler is tart, features a subtle vanilla, and lighter than I would have guessed. Overall, I was pleasantly surprised by how much I liked this beer. UA is another Cincinnati brewery offering home delivery during the pandemic. You’ll find more info on their website.
Double Hi-pitch Mosaic IPA from Hi-Wire Brewing, Asheville, NC

On my trip to Asheville this past November I didn’t have enough time to visit the Hi-Wire brewery but really wished I would have went now. This was a special release of their flagship Hi-Pitch Mosaic IPA. This version is dry hopped, West Coast style. At first I only picked up a single of this beer, I went back the next day to get more. At 9% ABV and 95 IBUs, I would live here. This beer is hoppy, dank, features notes of topical melon, and is just boozy enough.
I wish it were winter, we could make it into ice blocks and skate on it! And then melt it in the springtime and drink it!

Don’t Drive on the Railroad Tracks TIPA, Nowhere in Particular, Dayton, OH

I’m not going to lie, I thought I was completely over the “haze craze” then I decided to pick up this beer from NIP. I almost skipped over it but I’ve enjoyed so many of their beers I decided I had to give it a try, then I read the can and it said triple dry hopped and I was sold. At 7.5% ABV it won’t knock your socks off with its booziness but it does feature a nice floral hoppy balance through all the haze.
Orange Cream Ale, March First Brewing, Blue Ash, OH
March First does it right. Not only with this beer but with everything they do. The Orange cream ale is no exception. It’s light and reminds you of those orange cream popsicles from days of summer’s past. It’s 4.7% ABV and a great first beer of the day. March First is offering carry out hours and offering pretty good deals on pounders like the can in the picture.
Turn This Bus Around, Listermann Brewing, Cincinnati, OH
People love Listermann’s and with good reason. Turn this Bus Around is a collab beer with Weldwerks. This beer is thick, full body. It’s sweet and packed with vanilla and cinnamon. Big flavor from start to finish like a pasty stout should be. At 12.1% make sure you’re ready for dessert. Yes, Listermann is offering delivery to Ohio customers. Check out their website or social media for more information.
Java the Stout, Jackie O’s, Athens, OH
I love Jackie O’s. Where I’m from they’re the OG of craft beer and have been doing it right for 25+ years. With the release of Star Wars IX on blu ray dropping on 3/31 I had to have a Java the Stout again. I’ve said numerous times I’m a sucker for Star Wars themed beers, this was the first one I ever had. It’s a coffee stout brewed with lactose and Ridge Runner French Roast coffee beans and checks in at 6.5% ABV so it’s up to you if you’re going to join the dark side or not.
